The heated water circulates through the coffee grounds and the brewed beverage slowly drips down into the pot. A vacuum brewer is one which uses the principle of vacuum to brew coffee. The coffee is placed in the top half of the vessel where as the water is placed in the bottom half. Upon heating the water expands and forces its way through a narrow tube in to the top half where it is contained. After a sufficient amount of time the heat is removed and the vacuum causes the coffee to pass through a strainer into the bottom half.

In the case of a percolation, water is filled in the percolator and the powder is placed in a separate compartment. When boiling, the water is forced up a tube which is in the center of the percolator and into the coffee chamber. The water then drips back down and the cycle continues until brewed to perfection.
